Secretary of State Announces Final Voter Registration Numbers; Offers Key Election Day Reminders

Trenton, NJ — Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells has announced that New Jersey will have a record 5,401,605 registered voters for tomorrow’s general election. This figure includes 631,512 new registrations since January 1, 2008. Of this number, 134,158 are newly registered Democrats, 41,950 Republicans and 454,711 choosing unaffiliated as their party preference. The remaining 693 registered under third parties.

“This extraordinary number of new registrations reflects the historic nature of this year’s election,” said Governor Jon S. Corzine. “Clearly, our citizens recognize that exercising their fundamental right to vote is an effective way to participate in the democratic process.”

Secretary Wells also noted New Jersey has received a record 287,475 absentee ballot applications. To be accepted, all voted absentee ballots must be returned to your County Board of Elections by 8 p.m. on November 4.

“Interest in this year’s presidential election has been nothing short of remarkable, and the people of New Jersey need to know that we have worked tirelessly with county officials to ensure a smooth and seamless election process on Election Day,” said Wells. “Yet with turnout expected to exceed 80 percent statewide, we ask that voters be patient and to visit your polling place during off-peak hours if possible.”

A voter can also locate the address of their polling place by contacting their County Board of Elections. The Board of Elections in each county designates the polling place location for each of the county’s registered voters. Telephone and address information for all 21 county boards in New Jersey are also available on the Division of Elections website,www.NJElections.org.

Registered voters can also locate the address of their polling place by visiting www.NJElections.org or by contacting the division at (609) 292-3760.

Polling places in New Jersey will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on November 4. With the anticipated record turnout, the Division of Elections recommends that voters visit polling places between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the lines are expected to be shorter. Any voter in line by 8 p.m. has the right to vote.

Election results will appear on the www.NJElections.org, as soon as they are received after the close of polling places statewide at 8 p.m.
